Losing everything

Five generations of entrepreneurs built the ground Doug Whittaker stood on. Addiction took all of it — the business, the certainty, the man he thought he was. This is the record of the way back.

The Book

More than a business
book. A survival guide.

For anyone who has lost everything and needs to find their way back.

Born into five generations of builders, Doug seemed destined for it. Then addiction brought his thriving education business — and everything around it — crashing down. This is the raw, honest account of what he did next.

Part memoir, part playbook, it lays out the faith-based recovery principles and practical strategies that helped Doug rebuild not just a company, but a life with purpose and meaning.

A real roadmap from someone who walked through the worst of it and found his way back.

— Reader, third-generation business owner

Meet Doug

Doug Whittaker is a fifth-generation entrepreneur, an author, and a man who lost the thing he was supposed to inherit — and learned to build something truer in its place.

He writes and speaks for the people the usual success stories skip: the ones mid-collapse, the ones starting over, the ones who need a roadmap written by someone who’s actually walked it. His work is honest about the failure and generous with the way out.

Honesty before strategy.

You can’t rebuild on a story you’re still lying about.

Relationships are the capital.

The people you keep matter more than the numbers you post.

Faith did the heavy lifting.

Recovery gave the foundation the business could stand on.

Rebuild the person, then the work.

Order matters. The second only holds if the first is real.

Chapter 01 —

Passion – The Whittaker Boys

Five generations of entrepreneurs came before him. The expectation wasn't spoken so much as inherited: you build, you provide, you carry the name forward. Doug grew up certain of where he was headed.

Chapter 02 —

My Entrepreneurial Story

Everything I had built seemed to be slipping away. Digital Edge Learning had grown into an $8 million company, but when the iPad changed the educational technology landscape, our revenue collapsed and we were suddenly left with $2.8 million in debt. It was one of the darkest moments of my entrepreneurial journey.

Chapter 03 —

Breaking Bad Habitz

About two weeks into treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction, I told one of the women at the rehab center about the aromatherapy candles I used to make in my garage. I explained that once I got out, I planned to buy an RV, make candles in it, and drive to Nashville.

Chapter 04 —

From Educator to Entrepreneur

The first sounds I heard were pop, pop, pop, three gunshots followed by the screams of forty seven-year-old students. In an instant, everything around me changed. My only thought was getting those children and their teachers to safety.

Chapter 05 —

The Fall of Digital Edge Learning and the Rise of digiCOACH.

In 2011, a perfect storm hit Digital Edge Learning. For years, our sales had climbed and success seemed almost guaranteed. Then the iPad arrived, our best-selling products began disappearing from classrooms, and the ground beneath our company seemed to collapse.
